« Many a night I saw the Pleiades, rising thro’ the mellow shade, glitter like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid” – “Locksley Hall” – Alfred Lord Tennyson
This asymmetrical necklace takes its inspiration from the ethereal and magical Pleiades star cluster, also known as the seven sisters in Greek Mythology. It is a conspicuous object in the night sky with a prominent place in ancient mythology. The cluster contains hundred of stars.
Through this piece, I intend to emphasize Tahitian pearls in a rhythmic composition, appearing as if stirred into motion. My aim was to interpret this fluid, yet forceful star formation into a dynamic necklace that makes reference to the harmonious stars. Stars are clustered and directional – dashing amongst the heavens, suggesting a continous rhythm, just like a song.
Tahitian Pearls are surrounded by smaller spheres incrusted with black and white diamonds to give a glistening effect and to emulate a star-cluster. The main framework of this neckpiece is crafted in mirror-finish 18 K white gold that cohesively holds the star cluster within. This dual-frame is a “7” in reverse, referring to the Seven Sisters in Greek Mythology. Framework is defined, un-embellished and clean, so that Tahitian pearls are effectively highlighted. Not only does it render movement to the piece, but also serves as a contrast giving maximum attention to the fancy-coloured Tahitian pearls.
Necklace is prominent in both front and back, suggesting the all encompassing stars. It has spring-loaded mechanism as back-closure, which helps to open and close this piece comfortably. Necklace is hinged for flexibility. The Gallery is delicately worked-on to finish the underside with star symbol cut-outs. Overall feeling is of elation, passion and celebration.
